Playbooks

Define, track, and perfect your trading setups

What Are Playbooks?

Playbooks are reusable templates for your trading setups. Each playbook defines the rules and criteria for a specific strategy—entry conditions, exit rules, and risk parameters. By codifying your setups, you can objectively track how well you follow your own rules and measure which strategies actually perform best.

Define Your Setups

Create detailed playbooks with entry, exit, and risk rules for each strategy you trade

Track Adherence

Score every trade against your playbook rules to measure discipline over time

Compare Performance

See which playbooks produce the best results with side-by-side analytics

Link to Trades

Associate journal entries with playbooks to build a complete performance picture

To create a playbook, navigate to the Playbooks page and click New Playbook. Each playbook consists of:

  • Name: A short, descriptive name (e.g., "VWAP Bounce Long")
  • Description: Detailed notes about when and why this setup works
  • Entry Rules: The conditions that must be met before entering a trade
  • Exit Rules: How you manage and close the position
  • Risk Rules: Position sizing, stop placement, and maximum loss parameters

Be as specific as possible. Vague rules like "enter when it looks right" defeat the purpose. Instead, use concrete criteria like "price pulls back to VWAP with delta divergence on the footprint."

The rule builder lets you define structured criteria for each phase of your trade. Rules are organized into three categories:

Entry Criteria — Conditions that must be met before entering. Examples: price at key level, delta confirmation, volume threshold, indicator alignment.
Exit Criteria — Rules for closing the position. Examples: target price hit, trailing stop triggered, time-based exit, reversal signal.
Risk Rules — Position sizing and loss limits. Examples: max contracts, stop distance in ticks, max dollar risk per trade, daily loss limit.

Each rule is evaluated as a checkbox when you review a trade. Did you follow this rule? Yes or no. This binary assessment makes adherence scoring objective and consistent.

Every trade linked to a playbook receives an adherence score based on how many rules you followed. Scores are graded A through F:

GradeAdherenceMeaning
A90-100%Excellent discipline, followed nearly all rules
B80-89%Good execution with minor deviations
C70-79%Average, several rules broken
D60-69%Poor adherence, significant rule violations
FBelow 60%Strategy was largely abandoned

View adherence trends over time with built-in charts. Filter by date range—7 days, 30 days, 90 days, month-to-date, year-to-date, or a custom range—to spot patterns in your discipline.

The rule breakdown table shows which specific rules are violated most often, helping you identify exactly where your discipline breaks down.

Share your playbooks with your team or the broader Profitabul community. Shared playbooks let others import your strategy template and adapt it to their own trading.

  • Team sharing: Share privately with specific team members
  • Community sharing: Publish to the community library for anyone to use
  • Importing: Browse shared playbooks and import them with one click

Use the comparison view to evaluate playbooks side by side. This helps you answer the question: which of my strategies actually performs best?

  • Win rate comparison: See which playbook has a higher win percentage
  • P&L comparison: Compare total and average profit per playbook
  • Adherence comparison: Identify which strategy you follow most consistently
  • Risk metrics: Compare drawdowns, average loss, and risk/reward ratios

When reviewing a trade in your journal, you can associate it with one of your playbooks. This creates a two-way link:

  • From the journal: See which playbook a trade was based on and its adherence score
  • From the playbook: View all trades that used this strategy, with aggregate stats

Over time, this builds a comprehensive dataset showing exactly how each strategy performs when you follow it versus when you deviate.

Pro Tip
Start with 2-3 playbooks for your best setups. Track adherence religiously—the data will show you where discipline breaks down.
